White space is a design element we use, without really thinking about it, in order to make our documents more readable. Old habits (from "the days of typewriters") eat up our time unnecessarily, because newer word processing software gives us faster, more consistent ways to accomplish the same result. In addition, "typewriter habits" create accessibility problems, because screen readers may read every extra use of blanks like paragraph breaks.
